In recent times, Plateau State has witnessed another wave of brutal killings that has claimed the lives of many innocent people in cold blood. This is not to say that the killing has ever stopped at any point in time, but rather that this instance occurred on a large scale and in a place we least expected.
It was on Palm Sunday, 29th March 2026, at approximately 7:15 pm (though I am not precise on the exact minute), when people were relaxing, taking in fresh air outside, and going about their normal duties. Suddenly, terrorists—under whatever guise—arrived in cars, Keke Napeps, and on motorbikes, and began to unleash bullets of all sorts on the people. They were shooting sporadically at all their victims, regardless of where they were coming from. The situation was worsened because many individuals were simply returning home from different locations, only to fall into the trap of these terrorists. The attackers spent a long time gunning down these innocent people without any intervention from security agencies.
Men, women, and children became victims of this violent attack on that Palm Sunday evening. Reports indicate that over 35 people lost their lives and many others were wounded. Most pathetic was the case of a widow who lost her only son, a 300-level student at the University of Jos.
As of the time of filing this report, all the victims have been honorably buried by the State Government. Most of the wounded have been discharged from the hospital and are gradually completing their treatment at home. The State Government covered the medical bills of all the wounded. Calm has since returned to the community, as security personnel were massively deployed to the area.
THE KILLINGS OF INNOCENT PEOPLE IN HEIPANG, BARKIN LADI LGA
It all started with the killing of two women at Foron Junction by Fulani attackers. These two women were traveling at about 11:00 pm. It is reported that the attackers had come to target students who usually hold a party every Wednesday at a “joint” opposite the Plateau State Polytechnic, Barkin Ladi.
On that fateful day, 3rd March 2026, the students had been given an Easter break; hence, the party did not hold. The attackers had arrived to unleash mayhem on those at the party, but they found no one, as the students had all gone home for the break.
Desperate to kill that day, the attackers went in search of other victims and encountered these two innocent ladies. They rained bullets upon them; one woman died instantly, while the other sustained bullet wounds and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
As if they were not satisfied with the number of victims, they proceeded to an Evangelist’s house and surrounded it. However, with the intervention of soldiers and other security personnel, including vigilantes, they were repelled that day.
Subsequently, on 5th April 2026, the assailants returned to Pwomol in Heipang in large numbers to attack innocent people. On that day, three people became victims as they unknowingly fell into the hands of these terrorists. Through the concerted efforts of security men and vigilantes, the attackers were again repelled. That night, one of the terrorists was apprehended with bloodstains by soldiers as he was retreating.
THE ATTACKS IN RIM AND JOL OF RIYOM LGA, PLATEAU STATE
There have been serial attacks in Rim and Jol recently. One of these attacks took place on Saturday, 11th April 2026, where one young man was killed. Reports indicate that the attackers arrived in large numbers and struck Rim and Jol simultaneously, ensuring that no help could come from either village to the other.
By God’s mercy, only one person fell into their hands that day before they were repelled. There are many such attacks unleashed on the Berom communities and villages, but God has been the one fighting for His people.
